Teeth Whitening Q & A
What Causes Teeth to Discolor?
Your teeth may become dingier and yellowed for many reasons, including:
- Consumption of certain foods like coffee, tea, and red wine
- Tobacco use
- Aging and degradation of the outer enamel
- Trauma
- Certain medications, such as antihistamines and high blood pressure medications
Why Should I Choose to Whiten My Teeth?
Teeth whitening is a popular procedure to make teeth whiter and brighter. It improves the look of your smile and can boost your self-esteem. You may choose teeth whitening to change stained and discolored teeth or to enhance a dull smile. It’s safe and relatively painless for most people.
How Does Whitening Work?
Whitening products use bleaches, namely hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, to break the stains on your teeth into smaller units. The stain colors become less concentrated, so your teeth look brighter.
Not all teeth respond well to whitening. You usually see changes in yellowed teeth, but brown and greyed teeth don’t change significantly. Crowns, fillings, and veneers also can’t be whitened. If you have discoloration due to certain medications or a tooth injury, whitening won’t be effective either.
What are the Options for Teeth Whitening?
Tray whitening is an effective treatment that you can do in the comfort of your own home. It provides a gradual effect.
At DiRenzo Family Dentistry, the staff takes an impression of your teeth to create a customized clear tray. When the tray is ready, you come in and learn how to apply the special bleaching material to the trays so you can wear them at home.
You’re directed to wear the whitening gel trays for 30-60 minutes once or twice per day until you achieve the brightening you desire.
Are There Any Side Effects that Occur with Teeth Whitening?
In some cases, the bleaching agents can create tooth sensitivity. The peroxide in the whitener can cause tooth sensitivity since it penetrates your tooth’s enamel to get to the soft dentin and nerve root.
The sensitivity usually subsides on its own, but you may need to spread your treatments out longer to ease any discomfort. Always talk to the staff at DiRenzo Family Dentistry if you’re experiencing problems.
