Crowns & Bridges Q & A
What is a Crown?
A crown acts as a cap for a damaged tooth. It offers strength and improves the tooth’s appearance and shape. Dr. DiRenzo and Dr. Bett may also place a crown over an implant to make it look and function like a natural tooth.
Why Would I Need a Crown?
You may need a crown for numerous reasons. These include:
- Covering a dental implant
- Covering a discolored or poorly shaped tooth
- Protecting a tooth that’s undergone a root canal
- Attaching a bridge
- Restoring a fractured tooth or protecting a weak tooth
- Replacing a large filling
What Types of Crowns are Available?
Crowns are available in porcelain or ceramic. Dr. DiRenzo and Dr. Bett can match either to the color of your teeth.
Gold, acrylic, and metal alloys are also used to make crowns. The dentists at DiRenzo Family Dentistry may recommend one of these alternative materials because they tend to be stronger and suitable for back teeth.
What are Bridges?
Bridges fill the space left by missing teeth. Dr. DiRenzo and Dr. Bett place artificial teeth into the spaces and then cement them in place by using the surrounding teeth for support. Bridge work is both cosmetic and functional.
Dr. DiRenzo and Dr. Bett may recommend a bridge if you’re missing one or more teeth. It’s essential to fill in these spaces, so the existing teeth don’t shift into the empty spaces, possibly leading to a poor bite, gum disease, or decay.
Bridges come in porcelain, gold alloys, or ceramic material; all can match your natural tooth color. The doctors at DiRenzo Family Dentistry recommend a material based on wear, aesthetics, and where in your mouth the bridge is to be placed.
What Does the Process of Getting a Crown or Bridge Involve?
Dr. DiRenzo or Dr. Bett first reduce the size of your existing teeth so that the crown or bridge can fit securely and correctly. They then take an impression of your teeth and determine the right color to match your existing teeth.
The staff sends your impression to a lab to create the crown or bridge. While you wait for it to be made, Dr. DiRenzo or Dr. Bett fit you with a temporary bridge or crown.
